A New Way of Teaching…

In an effort to find a way to “multiply” myself during the school day, I have tried something new during Math Centers. Each day my students complete a center activity. The activities may include a worksheet, game, or project, etc. For the past couple weeks, I added a recorded lesson using the app Show Me to our Math Centers. In preparation of Math Center time, I recorded myself talking and drawing with the Show Me app. I saved and uploaded the presentation. When Math Centers began, I plugged my iPad into our Smart TV, told the group to get their iPads, open the Show Me app, and then listen to the lesson. That left me free to work with another group of students. It was definitely weird to hear my voice across the room, but when I saw the student engaged and following the lesson, I was thrilled!

This last week’s lesson was on shapes. As I explained the shapes, the students had to draw them and count the sides and corners with me. This lesson ended with the students going on a shape hunt around the classroom. It was so empowering to see the students do exactly what was asked by me from the Show Me video instruction. It also gave me more opportunity to work with a small group without being disrupted by the other students.

Here is an example of the lesson:
