Teaching Sight Words

Sight words are important for students to master, especially Kindergarten students. Being able to quickly read and recognize sight words improves reading fluency and automaticity. Plus many sight words don’t follow the rules and make it hard to sound them out.

Each day during Reading Workshop, students complete Word Work. This is where they practice recognizing, reading and writing their sight words.

Here is a list of our favorite word work activities:

Rainbow Writing
Bumpy Writing
White Board Writing
Write the sight words with many different utensils (pencil, crayon, colored pencil, and highlighter)
Sand Tray Writing
Use Playdough
Letter Magnets
Wikki Stix
Write a Sight Word in a Sentence
Sight Word, Word Search
Dice Roll a Sight Word
Spin a Sight Word (using spinning tops)
Find a Sight Words in a Chapter Book
Writing the Sight Words Spooky (use black paper and white crayons-so simple, but the students love it!)
Alphabetize the Sight Words
Magnifying Sight Words-here
Sight Word Scrabble (integrates Math with addition practice)
Letter Bead Stinging Sight Words
QR Code Scanning-try this!

I am always nervous that my students may be bored, however even the simplest ideas to practice never seem to tire them! And of course the more practice the better! When students are confident in sight word reading, they become more eager and confident in their reading all together!
